Star Island Miami

Circle Miami’s most famous residential island for “Millionaire’s Row” views, calm-water cruising, and standout skyline angles—best enjoyed as a slow, respectful boat loop.

Star Island is a man-made, ultra-exclusive residential island in Biscayne Bay within Miami Beach (33139). It’s known for massive waterfront estates and its long-running reputation as one of Miami’s most high-profile addresses.

For boaters, Star Island is primarily a cruise-by destination: you circle the island at a slow pace for architecture spotting and photos. There are no public docks, restaurants, or parks on Star Island for visitors, and land access is controlled at a guard gate—plan your day around being on the water.

Expect steady traffic from tour boats (especially weekends) and keep your route simple: a relaxed perimeter loop, then pair it with nearby stops like Monument Island or a scenic pass by Palm and Hibiscus Islands.

Distance
Minutes from the MacArthur Causeway corridor in Biscayne Bay; an easy add-on to most Miami/ Miami Beach departures.
Best Time
Weekday mornings for lighter wakes and cleaner photo angles; sunset cruises are beautiful but plan ahead for nearby overnight anchoring limits.
What to Bring
Polarized sunglasses, sunscreen, drinking water, a camera/phone zoom lens, a chart app/VHF, and a light layer for breezy bay conditions.

What to Expect on the Water

A Star Island visit is all about a slow cruise around the perimeter in Biscayne Bay. You’ll see waterfront mega-mansions, manicured seawalls, and frequent sightseeing vessels running “Millionaire’s Row” routes. Depending on where you are on the loop, you can line up excellent views toward Downtown Miami and Brickell—ideal for photos when the light is lower and the glare drops.

Because it’s a private residential neighborhood, treat this as a pass-by: no docking, no tying off, and no stepping ashore. Keep music and wake minimal near homes, and stay alert for tour-boat traffic, crossing wakes, and tight maneuvering zones.

About This Destination

Star Island was created in the early 1920s through dredging and development during the rapid growth of Miami Beach. Over time, it became one of the area’s premier enclaves of large waterfront estates—helping cement the island’s “Star” reputation tied to celebrity and high-profile residents. Today, it remains a gated, private neighborhood, best experienced from the water as a scenic, slow-cruise loop.

Boater Tips & Local Etiquette

Plan for a cruise-by loop: Star Island has no public docks, restaurants, or visitor facilities.

Respect privacy: do not attempt land access (guard-gated) and avoid lingering close to seawalls or private docks.

Run slow and minimize wake near shore—tour boats and weekend traffic make the area wake-prone.

Stay mid-channel when possible for the best views and safer spacing from private property.

Avoid tying up anywhere on the island; if you want to stop, choose nearby legal, popular areas like Monument Island instead.

Overnight planning: parts of Biscayne Bay nearby are within an Anchoring Limitation Area with sunset-to-sunrise restrictions—use marinas or other legal options if staying late.
