Monument Island

A classic Biscayne Bay boat stop with a sandy shoreline, shallow wading water, and the iconic Flagler memorial obelisk framed by Miami and Miami Beach views.

Monument Island—also known as Flagler Memorial Island or Flagler Monument Island—is a small, boat-in public island park on Biscayne Bay between the MacArthur Causeway and the Venetian Causeway. It’s one of the easiest “quick escapes” from Miami and Miami Beach, with 360° skyline scenery and a photo-worthy monument at the center.

There are no on-island services, docks, or rentals, so plan it like a true pack-in/pack-out day trip. Most boaters come to anchor off the sandy edge, hop in for a swim or wade, and relax for a few hours before cruising to nearby marinas or dock-and-dine spots.

Because it sits in a high-traffic corridor, approach slowly, watch for wakes, and choose an anchoring spot carefully—aim for sand and avoid seagrass where possible.

Distance
Short run from Miami Beach, Watson Island, and Downtown Miami (minutes by boat, conditions dependent).
Best Time
Weekday mornings for calmer water and fewer raft-ups; weekends are lively and can be crowded.
What to Bring
Drinking water, snacks/picnic, sun protection, trash bags (pack-in/pack-out), towels, and snorkel mask if you want to explore the shallows.

What to Expect at Monument Island

Monument Island is a small sandy island with a tall obelisk memorial honoring Henry M. Flagler, commissioned in the early 1920s. The monument features four allegorical statues (commonly cited as representing themes like Education, Industry, Prosperity, and pioneering spirit). Around the island, the water is often shallow near the edge—great for wading—while the surrounding bay can be busy with passing boats and causeway traffic. Expect a relaxed, social “boat day” vibe, especially on weekends, plus standout views of the Miami and Miami Beach skyline.

Boater Tips for a Smooth Stop

Approach slowly—this area can be congested and wake-prone near the causeways.

Anchor with care: target sandy bottom and avoid seagrass where possible.

Plan for zero facilities (no restrooms, no water, no trash cans).

Bring a trash bag and leave no trace to help protect Biscayne Bay.

If you want a quieter experience, arrive earlier or visit on a weekday.

Anchoring rules can change—confirm current Miami Beach/Florida regulations before settling in.
