Stiltsville Historic Viewing

Cruise out to Biscayne Bay’s iconic stilt houses for one of Miami’s most unforgettable sightseeing stops—colorful, historic, and photo-perfect from the water.

Stiltsville is a small cluster of brightly painted stilt houses standing over the shallow flats of Biscayne Bay inside Biscayne National Park. It’s boat-access only, making it a classic “must-see” destination for boaters near Miami and Key Biscayne.

This experience is all about viewing from the water. Public entry onto the structures is closed unless you have a permit or special use authorization, so plan for a slow cruise-by, respectful distance, and plenty of photos.

Because the area is extremely shallow, good charts, careful navigation, and tide awareness are part of the adventure—especially for deeper-draft boats.

About This Experience

Stiltsville’s story begins in the 1930s and grew into a legendary mid-century bay hangout—at one point hosting dozens of structures and notorious social clubs. Hurricanes, fires, and time reduced the community, and today the remaining houses are preserved as part of Biscayne National Park.

On the water, the scene feels surreal: colorful homes perched above clear, shallow flats with skyline views back toward Miami and Key Biscayne on a clear day. Expect a sightseeing-focused stop—no services, no docks to tie up to, and no general public access onto the buildings. The best way to enjoy it is a slow pass, brief station-keeping where safe, and keeping the seagrass flats protected by avoiding bottom contact and following park rules.

Suggested Boat Routes (Viewing-Focused)

Coconut Grove / Dinner Key → Stiltsville → Return

~2 hours (typical guided-cruise length)

A straightforward out-and-back bay cruise from Dinner Key Marina area with dedicated time for close-up viewing and photos. Great for visitors who want an easy half-day plan.

Key Biscayne / Cape Florida area → Stiltsville loop

~1.5–3 hours (conditions dependent)

A scenic loop that pairs Stiltsville viewing with big-water Biscayne Bay panoramas. Ideal for early morning when winds are lighter and the water is calmer.

Miami bay cruise + Stiltsville photo pass

~2–4 hours

Combine a relaxed bay cruise with a timed pass by Stiltsville during the best light. Keep it flexible around weather, tides, and weekend boat traffic.

Boater Tips & Rules to Know

Viewing only: do not plan to go onto/into the stilt houses unless you have a permit/special use authorization; the structures are closed to general visitors.

Plan to cruise, not camp: anchoring is prohibited in Stiltsville management areas except in an emergency—set expectations for a slow pass or brief station-keeping as conditions allow.

Shallow-water navigation is the main challenge: the flats can be very shallow, especially at low tide—monitor your draft and track the channel edges carefully.

Use up-to-date NOAA charts for Biscayne Bay and navigate at idle/slow speed near boats, shallow areas, and seagrass.

Bring a zoom lens or binoculars so you can enjoy details without pushing too close in skinny water.

Weekends get busy—arrive earlier for calmer conditions, easier maneuvering, and better photos.

Best Time for Stiltsville Historic Viewing

Morning is often ideal for smoother water and softer light for photos. Check wind forecasts and avoid strong fronts when Biscayne Bay can get choppy. Tide matters: higher water can provide a little more margin over the flats, while low tide can make the area less forgiving for deeper-draft boats.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Public access onto the structures is closed unless you have a permit or special use authorization. Plan to view and photograph the houses from your boat.

Yes. Guided cruises operate from Miami-area marinas (a common departure point is Dinner Key Marina in Coconut Grove). These tours are typically sightseeing-focused and designed for close-up viewing from the water.

Use updated NOAA charts, watch your depth closely, and factor in tide and your boat’s draft. The houses sit over very shallow flats, so slow speed and careful route selection are essential.

Anchoring is prohibited in Stiltsville management areas except in an emergency. Plan for a slow cruise-by or brief station-keeping only where safe and allowed.

Bring water and snacks (no on-site services), reef-safe sunscreen, a light wind layer, and a dry pouch for valuables. A zoom lens or binoculars helps you see details while keeping a respectful distance.

A commonly recommended option is Regatta Harbour Parking Garage (3351 Pan American Dr, Miami, FL 33133). Paid lots nearby may have time limits, and parking can be tight during peak periods—consider rideshare if needed.
