Sandbar party at Haulover
Haulover Sandbar is Miami’s iconic shallow-water meetup just inside Haulover Inlet—where boats raft up and everyone wades in clear, ankle- to waist-deep water. Go on weekends for peak party energy or weekdays for a calmer hangout.
Haulover Sandbar is a natural, shallow “wading pool” on Biscayne Bay just inside Haulover Inlet. It’s one of the most social places to anchor in Miami: boats raft together, music carries across the water, and the sandbar turns into a floating beach scene.
Because the sandbar has no docks, no on-water facilities, and changing depths with the tide, planning matters. Your best day comes from arriving with the right anchor setup, timing the tide well, and staying clear of the inlet channel where currents and boat traffic pick up.
Use the GPS coordinates below to navigate to the sandbar, and use Haulover Park / Bill Bird Marina as your on-land staging point for ramps, parking, and pre-departure essentials.
About This Experience
Haulover Sandbar sits just inside Haulover Inlet on Biscayne Bay and is accessed by boat, charter, or PWC only—there’s no public dock on the sandbar itself. On busy weekends and holidays, the vibe is a true “floating party,” with boats anchored and rafted together and people wading in the shallows. On weekdays, it’s often quieter and more relaxed.
Depth changes significantly with the tide, and conditions can shift quickly near the inlet. Plan to idle carefully, keep well clear of the marked channel, and anchor on sand (avoid seagrass). There are no bathrooms or lifeguards on the sandbar, so treat it like a remote day on the water: prep before you leave the marina and pack out all trash.
Popular boat-day plans (easy routes)
Classic Haulover Sandbar Session
Launch or depart from a nearby marina, arrive late morning, anchor on sand outside the channel, then wade and relax as the crowd builds toward midday. Ideal for first-timers who want the signature sandbar experience.
High-Tide Hang + Sunset Cruise
Time arrival for rising to high tide for better depth and clarity, then wrap with a slow cruise through North Biscayne Bay before heading back (note: Haulover Park hours and ramp/parking closure times vary by season and day).
Sandbar + Baker’s Haulover Basin (Calmer Anchorage)
Start at the sandbar for the social scene, then move to Baker’s Haulover Basin anchorage for a deeper, more protected stop (use charts; reported depths around 8–12 ft). Great when currents or crowding make the sandbar less comfortable.
Sandbar + Oleta River Nature Break
Pair the party sandbar with a quieter second stop near Oleta River State Park for a change of pace. A good option if your group wants both social time and a more scenic, relaxed cruise.

Local tips for a smooth sandbar day
Go on rising to high tide when possible—depth and clarity are often best, and it’s easier to set a comfortable anchor position.
Stay well clear of the marked inlet channel. Depths can drop quickly near the channel and currents increase closer to the inlet.
Idle near swimmers and PWCs, and be extra cautious during tide swings when current changes can be noticeable.
Anchor on sand and avoid seagrass or sensitive bottom areas. Verify your anchor is set before anyone gets in the water.
Use an anchor-line scope around 5:1 as a starting point (adjust for conditions). In crowds or stronger current, consider both bow and stern anchors to reduce swinging.
There are no bathrooms or lifeguards on the sandbar—use marina/park facilities before you depart and bring what you need.
Bring plenty of drinking water, sun protection, and a trash plan (secure a bag onboard and pack everything out).
Check NOAA tides for the area (Haulover Pier station is a helpful reference) and keep an eye on afternoon thunderstorms in warm months.
Follow posted speed zones: “Idle Speed – No Wake” means minimum speed to maintain steerage; “Slow Speed – Minimum Wake” means fully off-plane and settled in the water.
Best time to go
For the best mix of water depth and sandbar comfort, plan around rising to high tide—often late morning through mid-afternoon depending on the day. Weekends and holidays deliver the biggest party atmosphere; weekdays are typically calmer with more room to anchor. Avoid arriving too late on peak days because anchoring space fills quickly, and keep an eye on afternoon storm forecasts and inlet current changes around tide swings.
