Peanut Island Weekend Gathering

A classic South Florida boater tradition: anchor out near Peanut Island, raft up with friends, and spend the day swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing by the inlet. Go early, bring supplies, and plan for crowds on holiday weekends.

“Peanut Island Weekend Gathering” isn’t a single official event—it’s the well-known weekend ritual where boaters converge around Peanut Island and the nearby shallows of Lake Worth Lagoon for a social day on the water.

The draw is easy to understand: protected water close to Lake Worth Inlet, quick access from Riviera Beach, and an on-island Palm Beach County park with beaches, a snorkeling lagoon, docks, and a small tent campground.

Because slips are limited and weekends get busy fast, most groups treat this as an anchor-and-raft-up day. Use the park coordinate below as your destination pin, then choose a legal, safe spot to anchor based on wind, tide, and traffic around the inlet.

About This Experience

Peanut Island sits in the Intracoastal Waterway near Lake Worth Inlet, just east of Riviera Beach Marina Village and across from the Phil Foster Park / Blue Heron Bridge area. The island itself is a Palm Beach County park (boat access only) with day-use beaches, a popular snorkeling lagoon, docks, and a tent campground.

On fair-weather weekends—especially holidays—boaters arrive early, anchor out around the island, and raft up to swim, snorkel, and socialize. It’s a convenient “meet-in-the-middle” destination: close to the inlet, relatively sheltered depending on conditions, and iconic in local boating culture.

History adds to the appeal: Peanut Island is a manmade island formed from dredge spoil associated with the Lake Worth Inlet (often cited around 1918). It also has a JFK-era fallout shelter/bunker built in 1961, which is currently closed until further notice per the county park information.

Popular ways to do the weekend gathering

Anchor + Raft-Up Day (Classic Weekend Plan)

4–6 hours

Use the destination pin to arrive at the park area, then pick a legal anchoring spot based on wind/tide and current traffic. Set your anchor with adequate scope, deploy fenders/lines, raft up with your group, then swim and float (staying clear of restricted zones and travel lanes).

Dock-and-Explore Peanut Island Park

2–4 hours

Aim for the park docks early. Docking is day-use and first-come, first-served, with limited slips. Once secured, walk the island beaches and spend time at the snorkeling lagoon. Pack all food/water—there are no food or rental concessions on the island.

Shuttle-Assisted Meetup (Crew Without a Boat)

Half day

Have non-boating friends take the Peanut Island Shuttle Boat from Riviera Beach Marina Village to meet you on the island. Plan around posted operating windows—departures commonly start at 10:00am and returns get busy later in the afternoon, with the last boat off the island typically around 5:00pm.

Boater tips for a smooth (and safe) Peanut Island weekend

Arrive early on weekends/holidays—popular anchoring areas and slips fill quickly.

Plan for inlet effects: wind shifts and strong tidal current can change conditions fast near Lake Worth Inlet.

Bring your own supplies: no food or rental concession on the island—pack water, food, shade, and trash bags.

If you plan to raft up, bring extra fenders and lines and coordinate who is anchoring vs. tying on.

Follow park and boating safety zones: do not operate vessels through designated swim areas/lagoon/tidal basin and observe manatee/boating safety zones.

Know the dock rules: east-side floating dock has 10-minute loading/unloading zones and 14 numbered day-use slips (first-come, first-served).

Do not anchor/beach in prohibited areas—county rules note an exclusion between the East Boat Dock and the Fishing Pier.

For comfort: reef-safe sunscreen, snorkel gear, and a floating mat go a long way on busy days.

Best time to go

Fair-weather weekends are the tradition, with the biggest crowds on holiday weekends. For the easiest anchoring and less congestion, arrive late morning or earlier and plan your departure before late-afternoon traffic builds. If your crew is using the shuttle, coordinate your meetup around the last return window (often around 5:00pm) and expect the busiest shuttle lines around mid-to-late afternoon.

Yes. Follow county and posted rules, including a noted prohibition on anchoring/beaching between the East Boat Dock and the Fishing Pier. Also stay clear of designated swim areas and boating safety zones.

Day-use hours are generally sunrise to sunset in designated areas. There is no food or rental concession on the island, so bring all water, food, and shade you’ll need.
